RER: The Starting Point
Resting Energy Requirement, RER, is the number of calories a dog would burn in a day doing essentially nothing, lying down, digesting, keeping its organs running. RER alone would starve almost any dog that isn't literally sedated in a cage all day. A working farm dog burns several times its RER just doing its job. A senior dog napping most of the afternoon needs closer to 1.4 times RER. A Worked Example
Take a neutered 50-pound Labrador with normal activity. Convert 50 pounds to kilograms: 50 divided by 2.20462 is about 22.7 kg. Raise 22.7 to the power of 0.75, that's roughly 10.7. Multiply by 70 for an RER of about 749 kcal per day. Apply the neutered adult multiplier of 1.6, and daily calorie needs land around 1,198 kcal. A working version of the same dog at a 3.0 multiplier would need closer to 2,247 kcal, nearly double, which is exactly why activity level matters as much as weight in this calculation.
Why Body Condition Matters More Than the Number
Every number this calculator produces is a starting estimate, not a target to hit precisely. The better feedback loop is body condition scoring: feel along the dog's ribs, they should be easily felt under a thin layer of fat without pressing hard, and look for a visible waist from above and a slight abdominal tuck from the side. If a dog is gaining weight on the calculated amount, cut back 10 percent and recheck in two weeks. If it's losing weight it shouldn't be, add 10 percent. The formula gets you into a reasonable starting range fast, but the dog's actual body over the following weeks is the real feedback signal, not the kcal figure on its own.
