The Nose-to-Tail-Plus-4 Rule
Measure your dog from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, not including the tail itself, then add 4 inches. That figure is the minimum interior crate length your dog needs to lie down fully stretched out, turn around, and stand up without its head or tail brushing the walls. The 4-inch buffer isn't arbitrary padding, it's the margin trainers and manufacturers converge on repeatedly: enough room to move comfortably without so much space that a puppy can treat one end as a bathroom and still sleep undisturbed at the other, which undermines house-training.
Height matters too, though it's less standardized across sizing charts. Measure from the floor to the top of your dog's head or ears while standing, whichever is taller, and make sure the crate you pick lets your dog stand at full height without ducking. If a dog is unusually tall for its length, a Greyhound or a leggy mixed breed, for example, sizing up from what the length alone suggests is the safer call.

A Worked Example
A Border Collie measuring 26 inches from nose to base of tail needs a crate at least 30 inches long, 26 plus the 4-inch buffer. Checking the table, 30 inches also lines up with the typical Border Collie weight range, so both methods agree here, which is the usual case unless a dog is unusually long, short-legged, or heavy-bodied for its breed. When the two methods disagree, trust the measurement over the weight chart every time.
