Most barns don't have a livestock scale, but a soft tape measure and two numbers get you within a reasonable estimate of a horse's bodyweight. That estimate matters for dosing dewormer and medication accurately, tracking body condition over time, and catching sudden weight changes early.
The Weight-Tape Formula
This calculator uses the formula developed by Carroll and Huntington in 1988: weight in pounds equals heart girth in inches, squared, multiplied by body length in inches, then divided by 330 for an adult horse. Ponies use a smaller divisor, 299, because a pony's body carries proportionally more weight per inch of girth than a full-size horse's does, using the horse divisor on a pony's measurements would underestimate its true weight. The squared girth term does most of the work here, since girth grows roughly in proportion to how much muscle and fat wrap around the barrel, while length contributes a more modest linear adjustment for overall frame size.

How to Take the Two Measurements
Heart girth is measured by running a flexible tape around the horse's barrel just behind the withers and elbows, at the narrowest point of the chest, snug but not pulled tight enough to compress the ribcage. Body length runs from the point of the shoulder (the front of the chest) straight back along the horse's side to the point of the buttock (the back of the hindquarters). Both measurements should be taken with the horse standing square on level ground, since a horse standing unevenly or with a foot camped out can shift the reading by an inch or two, enough to noticeably move the final estimate given the girth term is squared.
A Worked Example
A horse with a heart girth of 75 inches and a body length of 80 inches: square the girth first, 75 times 75 is 5,625. Multiply by the body length, 80, for 450,000. Divide by 330, and the result is approximately 1,364 pounds, a reasonable weight for a mid-to-large light horse breed. Run the same 75-inch girth and 80-inch length through the pony divisor of 299 instead, and the estimate jumps to roughly 1,505 pounds, which is exactly why picking the right divisor for the animal in front of you matters more than the measurements alone.
How Accurate Is a Weight Tape, Really
Published comparisons against actual livestock scales generally find weight-tape formulas land within about 5 to 10 percent of true bodyweight for most horses in moderate body condition, close enough to catch a meaningful weight trend or dose most medications safely, but not precise enough to replace a scale for anything where exact weight genuinely matters, high-risk anesthesia dosing, for instance. Accuracy tends to drop off at the extremes, very thin or very overweight horses, draft breeds with unusually heavy bone structure, and late-term pregnant mares can all throw the estimate off further than the typical 5 to 10 percent range, since the formula was calibrated on horses in typical working condition, not those outlier body types.

No, foals and young growing horses have different body proportions that this adult-calibrated formula doesn't account for well. Dedicated foal weight-tape charts exist separately for that age group.

Ponies are more compactly built, carrying more weight relative to their girth and length than a taller, longer-legged horse would at the same two measurements. The smaller divisor corrects for that difference in build.
