A cage sized only to a bird's body, the way most pet-store cages are marketed, is almost always too narrow for the bird to open its wings. The dimension that actually matters most is wingspan, because a bird needs room to fully extend and flap both wings without either tip touching a bar. This calculator uses wingspan and body length together to give you real minimum width, depth, and height.

Why Wingspan, Not Body Length, Drives Cage Width

Even a bird that never flies inside its cage still stretches, flaps, and wing-exercises regularly, and needs to be able to do that without striking the bars on either side. The rule of thumb used here sets minimum cage width at twice the bird's full wingspan (wingtip to wingtip, fully extended), which leaves the bird centered in the cage with genuine clearance on both sides rather than just barely fitting with wings pinned in. Minimum depth follows at one times wingspan, giving enough room for the bird to turn and move perpendicular to its main flight line as well. Body length alone, the measurement most commercial cage boxes actually advertise against, badly undersells the space a bird needs, a small-bodied bird with a long wingspan (many parakeets and cockatiels fit this description) needs a noticeably larger footprint than body length suggests on its own.

Why Height Matters Less Than People Assume

Cage height gets a lot of marketing attention, tall cages look impressive on a shelf, but for most parrot and parakeet species, horizontal flying space matters more day to day than vertical space. These birds evolved moving side to side through dense branches and canopy far more than flying straight up, so a wide, modestly tall cage generally serves a bird better than a narrow, very tall one with the same footprint. Height still needs to clear the bird's actual body: this calculator sets a minimum of 1.5 times body length (beak tip to tail tip) as the low end and 2 times body length as a more generous recommended figure, enough for the tail to clear perches and toys without dragging on the cage floor or bending against the top when the bird is perched near either end.

This Is a Minimum, Not a Recommendation

Every number here is the smallest space in which a bird can move safely, not an ideal target. Real avian welfare guidance is consistent on this point: bigger is essentially always better, and a cage at exactly this calculator's minimum should be treated as the floor for a bird that also gets several hours of supervised out-of-cage time daily, not as a complete enclosure a bird can thrive in around the clock. If out-of-cage time is limited, size up well beyond these figures. Species also matters beyond wingspan and body length alone: highly active species like cockatiels and conures benefit from noticeably more room than these bare minimums, while calmer species may do acceptably closer to the floor, but none of that changes the underlying geometry this calculator is built on. Frequently Asked Questions

My bird's cage is taller than it is wide, is that a problem?+

It can be, if the width doesn't meet the minimum here. A tall, narrow cage can still leave a bird unable to fully extend its wings side to side, which matters more for most species than extra height does.

Do bar spacing and cage shape matter too?+

Yes, but they're separate concerns from overall size. Bar spacing needs to be narrow enough that the bird's head can't fit through, and that spacing requirement varies significantly by species and body size.

Should I measure wingspan with the wings relaxed or extended?+

Fully extended. A relaxed, folded wingspan measurement will undersize the cage, the whole point of the width minimum is giving the bird room for a full extended flap.
