Why a Generic Calculator Exists Alongside Dedicated Ones

This site already has dedicated age calculators for dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, hamsters, guinea pigs, turtles and tortoises, and cockatiels, each one built around real species-specific or breed-specific data rather than a single averaged curve. This calculator isn't trying to replace any of them. It exists for the simpler, faster question: "roughly how old is my pet in human years" without needing to know which of eight separate pages to visit first. The Shape Behind Every Species Here

For every species except dogs and cats, this calculator uses the same front-loaded curve already used across this site's other pet age calculators: a full first year of life counts as 21 human years, reflecting how much physical and developmental ground most small animals cover in their first twelve months, and every year after that adds a steady, linear amount that scales to reach roughly 90 human years by the end of that species' typical average lifespan. A hamster living to 2.5 years and a horse living to 28 both follow this same shape, just stretched or compressed to match how long each one typically lives.

Dog and Cat Are the Two Exceptions

Dogs and cats get their own, more specific math here rather than the generic curve, because both already have well-established, non-generic formulas backed by real research: dogs use the 2020 UC San Diego DNA methylation formula (16 times the natural log of age, plus 31), and cats use International Cat Care's widely cited 15-9-4 chart. A Quick Note on Every Species Covered

Rabbits average around 9 years, though this varies enormously by breed, from roughly 5 years for giant breeds up past 11 for smaller ones, which the dedicated Rabbit Age Calculator breaks out properly. What a Single Average-Lifespan Curve Can't Capture

Averaging every breed or variant of a species into one lifespan figure necessarily hides real variation. A giant rabbit breed and a dwarf rabbit breed don't actually share one lifespan, a small hamster species and a larger one age on genuinely different schedules, and turtles are the most extreme example on this entire list, some species barely reach 30 years while others plausibly outlive the person calculating their age. This calculator's generic curve necessarily smooths over all of that variation in exchange for covering every species with one simple input. That tradeoff is deliberate and disclosed, not an oversight, and it's exactly why every result links straight to a dedicated calculator built around that specific species' real variation instead.

A Worked Example

Select Guinea Pig and enter an age of 3 years. Since 3 is past the first year, the calculator applies the linear portion of the curve: a slope calculated from 21 human years at age 1 up to 90 human years at the guinea pig's average 5.5-year lifespan, which works out to roughly 15.3 human years added per guinea pig year after the first. At age 3, that's 21 plus 2 years' worth of that slope, landing around 51.7 human years, an adult guinea pig well into its own middle age.

Why does the first year count for so much?+

Most animals covered here reach a large share of their adult size and physical maturity within their first year of life, a pace of development that slows considerably afterward, which the curve reflects by front-loading that first year.

Why isn't there a generic reptile or bird category beyond what's listed?+

This tool covers the species this site currently has dedicated calculators for. Lumping very different reptiles or birds into one broad average would be less useful than either a species-matched estimate here or the dedicated calculator for that exact animal.
